16,000 people will eventually live in Googong.
Electric Cars
Googong will be one of the Canberra region's pioneers of sustainable transportation thanks to an agreement with Better Place (Australia) to install electric car charging infrastructure throughout the township.
The agreement builds on a 10-year, $60 million deal with ActewAGL for the supply of 100% renewable energy to Better Place's electric car charging network throughout Canberra—the largest renewable energy deal of its kind in Australia—and will form part of Better Place's public network of charging infrastructure for the region. Renewable energy for the project will be drawn from generation sources such as wind, hydro and solar.
CIC Australia has joined in partnership with Better Place, ActewAGL and ten other leading organisations, as Network Foundation Partners for electric car charging in the Canberra region.
This commitment will provide for metre boxes and wiring for electric car charge points in every home that will be built at Googong, discounted charge points for purchasers who opt-in to the technology, and create public charge points throughout the township for the use of every electric car driver.
CIC is also moving ahead with plans to run its own corporate electric cars as part of the company's commitment to sustainability. These will based and charged at the company's headquarters in Canberra city, as well as at its project office in Googong.
The Better Place model was identified early by the Googong team as a way to optimise energy access and use at Googong, and to provide residents with an integrated solution to demonstrate their own commitment to the environment. Our vision is to make Googong Australia’s first true electric car town. For more information about Better Place visit their website.
